One-Rep Max (1RM): How to Calculate and Use It
Your one-rep max (1RM) is the most weight you can lift for a single rep. It is the standard measure of strength and the basis for programming with percentages. You rarely need to test it directly — you can estimate it from sets you already do.

What a 1RM is and why it matters
A one-rep max is your maximum strength on a given lift. It matters because many strength programs prescribe weights as a percentage of 1RM (for example "work up to 5 reps at 80 percent"). Knowing your 1RM lets you choose appropriate weights and track strength precisely over time.
Estimating your 1RM (the safe way)
You do not have to attempt a true max to know it. Use the reps you hit at a known weight to estimate your max with a formula. A common one (Epley):
estimated 1RM = weight x (1 + reps / 30)
For example, 100 kg for 5 reps estimates about 100 x (1 + 5/30) = 117 kg. Accuracy is best when reps are low (under about 8). Our calculator does this for you across 270+ lifts.
- Warm up properly — ramp to something close to your working weight.
- Pick a weight you can lift for 3 to 8 reps with clean technique.
- Do one set, stopping when the next rep would break form.
- Record the weight and the reps.
- Use the Epley formula: 1RM is roughly weight × (1 + reps ÷ 30).

Using percentages of 1RM
Percentages let you target a goal:

Should you test a true max?
Testing a genuine 1RM is useful for powerlifters and the curious, but it is fatiguing and riskier than estimating. If you test, warm up thoroughly, use a spotter or safeties, and build up in small jumps. For most lifters, estimated maxes from working sets are accurate enough to program with.

Limitations of 1RM estimates
Estimates are most accurate at low reps and on lifts you are skilled at. High-rep sets (15+) overestimate, and a grindy single may not match a formula. Treat estimated maxes as a close guide, not gospel — use them to pick training weights and watch the trend over time.

Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate my one-rep max?

Do I need to test my actual 1RM?
Usually not. Estimating from a hard set of 3 to 6 reps is accurate enough for programming and far safer. True max testing is mainly for competitive powerlifters.
How accurate are 1RM calculators?
Very accurate at low reps (under about 8) on lifts you perform well. They become less precise at high reps, which tend to overestimate your true single.
What percentage of my 1RM should I train at?
It depends on the goal: about 85 to 100 percent for max strength, 65 to 85 percent for strength and size, and lighter for endurance. Most hypertrophy work sits around 65 to 80 percent.
