BCAAs vs EAAs: Do You Need Either?
BCAAs and EAAs are among the best-selling and most over-hyped supplements in fitness. They are not useless, but for most people they are redundant. Here is the difference and whether either deserves a place in your budget.
What they are
Amino acids are the building blocks of protein.
- EAAs (essential amino acids): the nine amino acids your body cannot make and must get from food. All are needed to build muscle.
- BCAAs (branched-chain amino acids): a subset of three EAAs (leucine, isoleucine, valine), with leucine being a key trigger for muscle building.
EAAs are the complete set; BCAAs are just three of them.
The problem with BCAAs
BCAAs alone provide only three of the nine essential amino acids. To actually build muscle, your body needs all nine. Supplementing only BCAAs is like delivering some building materials but not others — the job cannot be completed. This is why BCAAs have largely fallen out of favor among informed lifters.
Are EAAs better?
EAAs are more useful than BCAAs because they supply the full set of essential amino acids. They can stimulate muscle building, especially if taken when protein intake is otherwise low. But here is the catch: any complete protein source — meat, eggs, dairy, whey, soy — already contains all the EAAs, usually for less money.
Do you need either?
For most people, no. If you eat enough total protein (about 1.6 to 2.2 g per kg) from complete sources, you already get all the BCAAs and EAAs you need. A scoop of whey or a meal delivers them more cheaply and with more total protein. Spending on BCAA or EAA powders is usually unnecessary.
The rare cases they might help
There are narrow situations where EAAs could be convenient: training fasted for long periods, very low overall protein intake, or specific clinical contexts. Even then, a small protein feeding usually does the same job. For the average lifter hitting their protein target, both BCAAs and EAAs are optional at best.
